Mt. Charleston
In the summer, Mt. Charleston is a refuge from the heat, a hiker's dream and a camper's retreat. In the winter, it's a hot toddy in the Lodge, ski lifts and ski trails and snowballs.
At 11,918 feet above sea level, Charleston Peak is the second highest mountain of the Spring Mountain National Recreation Area, and the highest point of the Nevada portion of the Toiyabe National Forest. It is the eighth highest |

peak in Nevada. The temperature on the mountain is usually 25-30 degrees cooler than that of Las Vegas, making it a nice place to go for a drive and picnic during the heat of July and August. Take State Highway 95 north to Highway 157, the Mt. Charleston cutoff.
Picnic areas are many in the shade of the ancient pine trees above the 8,000 ft. level. It's about 35 miles north and west of Las Vegas. Many areas are also suitable for camping in the late spring and throughout the summer. Hikers love the area. The trails are many, and the views are some of the most beautiful in Southern Nevada.
